Critical Thinker – The Strength within a nurse

The NURSE that Could & DID!

Early in my nursing career I realized I felt a misalignment working in the traditional nursing intuitional setting under the control of a poorly run government healthcare system that regularly wasted tax payor dollars, lacked empathy, and did not appropriately consider point of care workplace concepts.

I chose a new and exciting career path utilizing my nursing education and specialized in medical foot, lower limb and wound care. At the age of 27 (25 years ago) I established my own practice and physical clinic.

OH, little did they know she wasn’t that little.

SHE MOST CERTAINLY IS AN RPN

WATCH HER ROAR!

Like many nurses my dream was to work in an area of care that was creative required ingenuity and innovation and where I could place my patients care first and have time to deliver quality care with a caring approach. At the end of the day this is why we become nurses.

We all must recognize healthcare needs are driven by the public in our communities and not by an idealistic government establishment who lack the ability to accurately and appropriately recognize point of care needs and concepts from their white ivory towers. Opportunities are often created when one recognizes a need and seeks to fulfill this need through acquiring the knowledge and skill to learn a new field of essential healthcare.

Nurses, have you ever been told you “were not enough” in your profession? If not this is a miracle and absolutely wonderful to feel valued and appreciated. Sadly, many nurses throughout their education and career paths have often communicated to me they have been degraded, bullied and told they were “never enough”. This is abuse and needs to finally be called out for what it is!

Are you considering a new career path towards WORK LIFE ENJOYMENT & FREEDOM? This publication is a brief look into my journey to success and professional happiness.

The path has been carved out for you!

The barriers have been broken!

The days of control by fear have ended!

If WORK-LIFE-FREEDOM IS WHAT YOU SEEK FOLLOW ME TO A HAPPIER CAREER!

As a young, inquisitive and energetic nurse with the most organic intentions I became locked in! I was so very excited to take on a new challenge, a new career path and role within the healthcare system and build my own community practice. Yes, I mean my very own clinic! “Unheard of for a Nurse” one would say. Twenty five plus years ago!

Let’s face it traditional nursing roles have changed. Yes, I know those old school nurses do not “like it” or as one nurse leader stated “Erin they are not ready”. Who’s “not ready” the establishment or the public I stated. The public most certainly was as I was as busy as could be. In fact nursing has ORGANICALLY evolved away from what “they” believed it should stay. Let’s face accepting change is not easy however, as my wise father once told me “the only thing constant in life my dear iS CHANGE”.

So let’s “let go” of the control and look towards positive change that benefits the public and supports the individual nurses desires to not only make a difference in his or her community but, promote their desires to grow outward and not necessarily in a perceived upward direction the establishment chooses for you.

Some nurses do not want to “climb” the traditional nurse education path from for example RPN to RN to RN(Ec). Some nurses take interests in areas of care that certainly do require specialization obtained through continued post graduate education. This education may come in many different forms and does NOT need to be controlled by “the establishment”. As referenced earlier the establishment often lacks the ability to appropriately consider point of care concepts given they are many times removed from such concepts.

it’s about time someone did!

I am excited for my readers to enjoy my new book that discusses my journey to success, the trials and tribulations as a nurse carving a new pathway in a specialized area of healthcare and how I personally overcame those challenges, fought the establishment and won! Release date coming soon!
